New York Hero’s Fund: Uncommon Grit Foundation Grantee Spotlight

When we, as Americans, think of the sacrifices first responders, law enforcement officials, and military service members have made during our lifetime, we would be remiss not to reflect on September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center in New York City. It is a day we will all remember, of course. Then there are nonprofit organizations like the New York Hero’s Fund working diligently to serve those who bravely served our country and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The New York Hero’s Fund (NYHF) was founded in 2011 to assist law enforcement personnel. Years later, the leaders of the nonprofit expanded its reach to include all first responders. Today, the mission of NYHF is to provide financial assistance and support to first responders in times of emergency and personal tragedy. Uncommon Grit Foundation (UGF) is proud to back this important initiative.

“One of our goals is to assist first responders, along with their families, during times when they face personal tragedies such as financial hardships caused by accidents, natural disasters, illness, or death,” said NYHF Treasurer Jim Gaunay. “These difficult times can be overwhelming and cause emotional and financial distress to the families of our service personnel who protect and serve.”

Based out of Malta, NY, the leaders of the NYHF witnessed firsthand the physical and emotional wreckage of the 9/11 tragedy. There was grave devastation immediately following the terrorist attack in 2001. But as the years went on, the leaders of the NYHF recognized the long-term implications of 9/11 for law enforcement, first responders, and family members.

“In wake of the tragedy of 9/11, our organization saw to it to assist those dealing with illnesses and death related to exposures at the World Trade Center site,” added Jim. “We all too often deal with line of duty deaths, which are such an emotional and devastating ordeal for the families, as well as those within the law enforcement community. We also saw a need to assist those families affected by illnesses and death and the subsequent financial and emotional stress related to these occurrences.”

Over the years, NYHF has fulfilled its mission thanks to the support from fundraising events, local businesses, and grants like those provided by the UGF.

“The support from UGF is very important to us mainly because our efforts parallel the efforts of UGF, which we consider such a noble cause—assisting our true heroes in the community,” shared Jim. “The assistance that UGF provides our military adds another layer of much-needed support to those in need.”

This summer, NYHF will host its annual golf outing to raise funds to support its mission. This year’s tournament will take place on July 18th at the Schuyler Meadows Club in Loudonville, NY. If you are in or near this area, please join them for this great event. Learn more at www.nyherosfund.org.
